Tom Light:
If my life were a game, I’d call it ‘Build or Lose’

The Person Behind the Professional
  • Every leadership journey is shaped by far more than business decisions alone. Behind every company are personal convictions, defining experiences, and the lessons that quietly influence how leaders think, decide, and grow. In Odds & Wisdom, we explore those stories through the voices of the people shaping the iGaming industry. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of FIRST – Best in Sports, Tom Light reflects on the values, habits, and experiences that have guided his career and continue to influence his approach to leadership.

I never make a decision without first understanding the downside. If I can live with it, I move fast.

The rule of life that never fails me is speed and consistency compound. Do it every day, do it fast.

The biggest misconception about me is that it’s about money. It’s not. It’s about building and competing.

The craziest moment of my career was when we went from zero to competing head-to-head with Tier 1 operators in under a year.

People are always surprised to learn that I don’t slow down. Even after big wins, I go straight back to building.

In high-level trading, especially live, things don’t behave clean. Context matters. Game flow, market sentiment, sharp activity. That’s where human expertise still wins.

Starting FIRST meant that doing it again, but this time exactly how I believe it should be done.

Competition taught me that you’re only as good as your strongest competitor.

Early in my career, I underestimated how much speed matters.

What still drives me today is building something better than what exists.

The most underrated skill in leadership today is clarity. Saying exactly what matters and what doesn’t.

When people describe me, I secretly hope they say he builds things that win.

Success, to me, smells like momentum. When things are moving and compounding.

The sound I associate most with my career is live markets moving. Constant updates, constant decisions. Never quiet.

The best advice I ever gave but never followed is slow down.

I start every Monday by looking at numbers. Reality first, then everything else.

From day one, I wanted a company that can deliver real changes in weeks, not months. In this industry, most suppliers are slow, heavy, and reactive. That kills operators.

If my life were a game, I’d call it build or lose.

The biggest risk I ever took was starting again after already “winning.”

My secret superpower is speed of decision-making.

The lesson I keep learning over and over is simple works. Complexity kills.

The strangest hobby I’ve picked up is turning everything into a system.
